Graduate School Rankings
In the mechanical world of today, challenges and competitions are common to our lives. You have been subject to rankings since your childhood in schools, then colleges, and other fields like sports, professional grounds and even in personal lives. These rankings are normally fixed according to the merit on an individual level, and performance, with respect to groups and associations. Schools, colleges, business enterprises and various industries and more recently, Internet websites are subject to the politics of rankings, where each one strive to prove better than the others.
The United States of America, the acknowledged super power of the world, is no exception in this field. Here the graduate school rankings, for instance, have turned out to be one of the most controversial topics of higher education. Different people have different opinions towards it. Some people look at them from a positive point of view. They believe that rankings enable students to compare and contrast the various graduate schools in the country due to which they get a better knowledge about them and better scope of selection. Moreover, they find it extremely helpful to get a proper direction towards their goal among the sea of graduate schools and colleges. From the university's viewpoint, the rankings are definitely a good way of attracting candidates.
On the other hand, some people express a strong dislike for graduate school rankings. They are of the opinion that rankings give more importance to quantity rather than quality. They magnify those aspects of the college or university that can be measured by such standards as test results or annual grading of the students. These people believe that the position of academic institutions should be measured only in terms of their quality such as the standard of classroom instructions, the quality of the teaching staff who give shape to the careers of the students, and the total infrastructure of the school or college that is required to fulfill the needs of the students, adequately.
The country has several professional organizations who keep a track on the top graduate school rankings, which sometimes include both national and international graduate school rankings. Undergraduate school rankings are also a part of this program. These companies prepare annual directories consisting of a detailed list of the rankings and sell them to top professionals and graduate programs. These lists are put up on the Internet, too. The top graduate school rankings encompass business, law, and medical schools which are reviewed annually. The reviews are done on the basis of peer reviews and certain specific factors, for instance, the percentage of the graduates of a law school who have passed the local bar examination. Compared to the above graduate programs, there are some others that are ranked and described in less detail, like dentistry, public affairs, journalism, and education. It is advisable that before you venture to go by the undergraduate school rankings, have a careful look at the lists that provide you with the necessary information. It may turn out to be a narrow evaluation reflecting the biased opinions of a small group. It may also be paid advertising, that usually happens with international graduate school rankings. In some yet other cases, you will find that the rankings are guided not by quality, but simply the size of the institution. So be careful not to be misguided. Studying at an institution with a high graduate school ranking might make all of the difference to your future career and standard of living.
