There are different facets of athlete representation and this can vary from being an agent in sports to getting endorsements. As an agent in sports, your main aim is to handle contract negotiation, and the secondary functions include representing top athletes and being their financial consultant. You can also act as an endorsement representative, which is the most popular aspect of athlete management. Athlete management in sports varies from agency to agency and the facets of athlete representation include negotiating a contract, arranging promotional opportunities, helping athletes in investing their income and last but not the least is helping them to prepare their taxes. The bigger the athlete management in sports organization, the larger the number of resources and hence it will encompass more services. Bigger organizations are like one-stop shop for athletes as well as athlete management in sports. As an agent in sports with a bigger organization, you will have more responsibilities, which will vary from advertising to promotion and from marketing to finances. For representing top athletes, the minimum educational qualification is a law degree or a bachelor's degree in sport marketing, which is ideally preferred. A law degree will help you to work as an agent in sports to understand and negotiate contracts for athletes. Some organizations don't put too much pressure on education qualifications and are more interested in your previous experience in representing top athletes. If you have the experience of working with athletes and for athletes, then you will be given preference as opposed to those with a educational qualification but this is applicable only for higher positions. Although sport marketing and athlete management in sports is a good career option but one thing you need to remember is that it is also a highly competitive business. Apart from your educational qualification, you need to know sports, and have good communication skills. A background in business will always be a plus point. The average salary for an agent in sports can vary from $50,000 to $70,000 depending on the company you are working with and your job responsibilities. Some of the important functions as an agent in sports or for athlete representation include: 1. Developing a relationship with athletes as well as corporate. When we talk of relationships, a client and an athlete should feel like they are a part of your organization. That's when a client would provide you with a promotion budget and an athlete will want to represent you. One very good example can be see from the Oscar nominated movie "Jerry Maguire" 2. As a sports agent, you will be involved in endorsement procurement, contract negotiations, media training, career & life counseling, public relations, and image management. 3. One of the most important functions of athlete management in sports is formulating a business strategy that is financially beneficial for an athlete in short-term or long- term. |
